Derby County win 2019 Bass Charity Vase – fans queue up with pelters

Liverpool won the Champions League this season, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final after a titanic comeback from a 3-0 deficit and battering at the hands of Barcelona in the semi-final. For Derby County, their 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign ended in a Wembley final defeat.

Like Liverpool in their Barcelona comeback, the Rams battered Leeds United 4-2 at Elland road in a second-half blitz that left the West Yorkshire club bewildered and their fans dumbfounded.  However, a defeat to Aston Villa meant that a climb to the Premier League was beyond them.

With that opportunity gone for a season, it is rebuild and recharge for Derby County and it is something they’ll have to do without last season’s manager Frank Lampard. Lampard has jumped ship for the hot-seat at former club Chelsea. However, that hasn’t stopped the club winning their first piece of silverware this season:

This post from the Rams official Twitter account shows club captain Richard Keogh holding the Bass Charity Vase after a 5-2 victory over neighbours Burton Albion. It is the first piece of silverware for new manager Philip Cocu, who will be looking to build on the solid foundations left to him by Lampard.

The Bass Charity Vase is a friendly competition with the express aim of raising funds for medical and hospital charities. It was founded in 1889 and the inaugural competition was won by Derby in 1890 with a 3-1 victory over Stoke City at Peel Croft, Burton Swifts’ ground.

With this year’s victory, Derby County extends their record as the tournament’s most successful side with 18 victories, opponents Burton Albion next in line on 14 wins. Whilst the Rams are celebrating this victory with the above Twitter post, there are many comments lining up pelters to throw at them.
