Former West Brom striker opens up on his ‘turbulent’ time at the club

Former West Bromwich Albion striker Peter Odemwingie has opened up on his time at the club in an interview with Planet Football.

Odemwingie enjoyed three years at the Hawthorns although the end of his tenure was less than enjoyable for all concerned.

The Nigerian international was questioned for his decision to move to the Black Country but he felt it was the right move at the time and he was happy at the club.

“I believed in myself. A lot of people were saying that it was the wrong club, that they go up and then they come down, but I have a strong intuition generally,” Odemwingie told Planet Football.

“I had a good feeling about the move and when I was signing the contract the sporting director said, ‘If you score goals here, everything else will fall into place.’”

“I happened to score the winner on my debut within two days of joining the club, and I won Player of the Month for the first complete month I played in England. I settled into the league well.”

The 38-year-old firmly established himself as a fans’ favourite in his first season and scored ten goals in the top flight including a hatrick against bitter local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, when Steve Clarke came in as manager he admitted that he was confused by some decisions which were made by the Scot.

“He often put me on the bench without saying anything, even if my last game had been fantastic. This was something new I had to deal with and I think if we had more communication maybe I’d have been less angry about it.”

Odemwingie enjoyed a successful time at the Baggies on the whole and the way in which it ended was a shame with the QPR debacle. His relationship with the club has now been repaired and with its supporters and his time at the club is certainly something he will look back on fondly.
